Banana Republic, U.S.A.? “Populism” Comes to America

In the wake of Scott Brown’s electoral victory in Massachusetts, establishment pundits have been fretting about the new political landscape. During a recent discussion on the PBS News Hour, New York Times columnist David Brooks worried that populism was coming into vogue. The political zeitgeist, he said, was turning a lot of people into Ron Paul.

“A lot of serious people suddenly think, oh, if I bash the Fed, I can go home and say, oh, I told those Wall Street types,” Brooks declared. “I think it is incredibly irresponsible,” he added. Responding to Brooks, co-panelist Mark Shields sounded the alarm. The Democrats were urging the White House to become more populist, he said, and sought to distance themselves from the excesses of Wall Street. “Now it’s every man for himself,” Shields declared, as if we were in the midst of the sinking of the Titanic.

Denver’s Transportation Future Arrived Today

Today I was thrilled to join Senator Michael Bennett and FTA chief Peter Rogoff at a press conference announcing that the federal government has agreed to loan $300 million dollars for the Denver Union Station redevelopment.

Since 1881, the Denver Union Station has been a major force in Denver’s regional evolution. It has acted as a major intercontinental rail link, the station helped shape transportation in the city, region and the nation. Today, we are on the threshold of a new frontier. The redevelopment of this site will restore Denver Union Station to it’s prominence as a force shaping our City and State’s future character and economy.

Jay Is Walking in LA — The Restaurant Scene

The husband-and-wife team of Quinn and Karen Hatfield have just opened their new, enlarged Hatfield’s (6703 Melrose Ave, Hollywood, 323-935-2977) in the location made famous by Chef Michel Richard in the 80s with Citrus, last seen here as Red Pearl. The Hatfields, who met while cooking at the original Spago in Hollywood, are energetic, talented chef/entrepreneurs, so lets hope they succeed here. Note: Quinn’s entire kitchen staff wears traditional chef’s toques!

Marketing genius Lynda Resnick (Rubies in the Orchard) tells me that since the earthquake in Haiti, sales of the home-delivery division of her Fiji Water have gone through the roof. People are sending cases of water to their children’s schools, their own offices and homes, to relatives and friends. It does make a welcome though unusual gift: a case of Fiji delivered once a month. When I was young we had the old-time seltzer man who each week climbed the stairs of our 4th foor walkup in Brooklyn lugging a case of blue seltzer bottles, for $4. Fiji Water shipped 136,000 cases of its water to the U. S. Airborne Division in North Carolina, who then dropped it into the middle of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Arianna Weighs In On Tea Party: Their Anger Is Based On Real Concerns (VIDEO)

Arianna appeared on CNN’s ‘The Situation Room’ Friday to weigh in on the first national Tea Party Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.

Arianna believes that while the fringe elements of the tea party movement may be garnering the biggest headlines, the group is based on substantive concerns about the decline of the middle-class. Because of anger stirred by lawmakers’ failures, Arianna warned that incumbents of both political parties should be worried about the upcoming midterm elections.

This Week In Art: Is Art Important?

We narrowly avoided a catastrophe this week in LA. “This is the first time the arts community was able to mobilize in such an effective way,” said Danielle Brazell, Executive Director of the arts advocacy group Arts for LA, which led the fight. “The arts locked arms and we were one community, and that’s extraordinary.” The Los Angeles Times reported that the coordinated outreach got to the Council members, and the motion that would have eliminated the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs‘ entire grant budget and almost half of its staff was taken off the table.

We had a victory this week, but it reminded me that there is a fundamental problem. The total grant budget of the Department of Cultural Affairs is only about $3.1 million, which may not seem like a lot. If, however, you consider that every grant dollar creates $8, and that one in every six jobs in greater LA is in the creative sector, this is a relatively small investment with a big return. And these grants are really important to nonprofit institutions because they give them legitimacy, helping to draw private and corporate funding.

The simple fact is that the arts are an important part of the economy, cultural tourism and add to the quality of our lives. Why is this forgotten each time there is a budget crisis, not just in Los Angeles but across the country?

Parental Notification Laws for Abortion Cause Physical and Emotional Harm

While Illinois has a mandatory parental involvement law on the books, it has long been enjoined. Thus, young women in Illinois who are capable of making their own abortion decision can do so with the guidance of their healthcare provider and other trusted adults. They are not forced to involve their parents where they do not feel safe doing so. However, the State is aggressively seeking to end that court protection for young women and to enforce the Illinois Parental Notification of Abortion Act. It is imperative to put an end to the threat of parental notification in Illinois, and to work to eliminate similar laws across the country.

I have seen first hand the harms that forced parental involvement impose on young women. My first clinic position in this field was as a counselor in Colorado before the state adopted parental notification. Every weekend I would counsel young women from the neighboring state of Utah, who had lied to their parents, borrowed money and often unreliable transportation, and driven long hours on strange highways and interstates to get to our clinic. It was not unusual to arrive at the clinic and find the young woman and the person who had traveled with her sleeping in a car.

Mayors Use State-of-the-Village Addresses to Lay Out Common Vision: Hang On for Dear Life!

It’s no accident that the relatively new trend of the splashy January state-of-the-village address was born and burgeoned during the housing boom. Back then–in the 1990s and 2000s, mayors wanted to get up and tout all the new housing starts and retail openings.

In those heady days, the state of the village was good and so the speech amounted to a campaign pitch for the mayor.
