Supreme Court Justice Roberts Fibbed in Alabama, and YouTube Proves It
Anyone who has ever questioned whether or not the Supreme Court is a politically-charged body can wonder no more. It is.
Chief Justice Roberts, a George W. Bush appointee, spoke Tuesday at the University of Alabama. Commenting on President Obama’s recent State of the Union remarks (where Obama criticized the Court’s decision declaring that corporations are people), Roberts stated that “The image of having the members of one branch of government standing up, literally surrounding the Supreme Court, cheering and hollering while the court — according to the requirements of protocol — has to sit there expressionless, I think is very troubling.”

A Tea Party’s Quixotic Effort to Recall the Senate
It was a dogcatcher from St. Maries, Idaho who took the first step in trying to recall U.S. Senator Frank Church in the spring of 1967. The petition was rebuffed in court, but soon a wealthy California backer and groups with names like ‘The Liberty Lobby’ and ‘Victory in Vietnam Committee’ followed.
They claimed that the Idaho Democrat’s opposition to the war in Vietnam was contributing to American deaths and providing aid and comfort to the enemy. They vowed that if they were successful, other dove senators like J. William Fulbright of Arkansas and Wayne Morse of Oregon would be next.

Paterson’s Poll Numbers Up
NEW YORK (Associated Press) – A new poll shows the percentage of New York voters who say scandal-plagued Gov. David Paterson should serve out his term has edged upward.
The Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday shows that 50% said Mr. Paterson should serve until the end of his term rather than resign. Another 39% said he should resign, with 11% undecided.

Healthcare Is a Moral Right
I find it absolutely absurd when I hear people, especially elected officials, saying, “The debate on healthcare has been too short. How can we expect to figure out such a massive change in our country with such a short conversation?” For those that don’t realize — a group that I hope would not include elected officials — we have been talking about healthcare and fixing our system since the beginning of the 20th century. Almost 100 years! Is that a short debate? Is that not enough time to understand that corporations making billions of dollars on the health of our citizens is an immoral and irrational way to render care? Is it not enough time, from Presidents Theodore Roosevelt to F.D.R to Truman to Eisenhower to Kennedy to Johnson to Nixon to Carter to Clinton and now Obama, to figure out that we need to overhaul and change how we provide insurance and healthcare for our citizens?
The “not enough time” argument is just a smoke screen for the “we are not interested in doing this” argument, which opponents of healthcare reform are too afraid to say out loud. The “not enough time” argument is a smoke screen for the “we get millions of dollars in campaign contributions from insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and other industry lobbyists and we like that money” argument. The “not enough time” argument is a smoke screen for the “those who can afford healthcare are doing fine and those can’t, well, work harder” argument that perpetuates a horrible trend in America that the wealthy dictate what the rest of the country has access to. It is time for this to end, and we are very close to making that happen.

Torii Hunter: Black Latinos Are ‘Impostors’
Torii Hunter has drawn attention for calling dark-skinned Latino baseball players “impostors.” In an interview that USA Today published Tuesday, the Angels outfielder discussed the changing demographics in baseball.
“People see dark faces out there, and the perception is that they’re African American. They’re not us. They’re impostors,” he told Bob Nightengale. He added, “As African-American players, we have a theory that baseball can go get an imitator and pass them off as us…. It’s like, ‘Why should I get this kid from the South Side of Chicago and have Scott Boras represent him and pay him $5 million when you can get a Dominican guy for a bag of chips?’”

Courage, and Heart, on Behalf of Kenya’s Women
Eight years ago, I walked into the Nairobi office of the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness expecting a mildly helpful discussion of my project on women’s property rights in Kenya. Ann Njogu, CREAW’s director, was clearly very busy and a serious lawyer. Within minutes, I knew that she was also a passionate, forceful advocate. She wasted no time in picking up the phone to hook me up with women to interview, deluging me with legal information, and guiding me on strategy.
This week, the US State Department is honoring Ann with the 2010 International Women of Courage Award. With this award the US government pays tribute to outstanding women leaders worldwide, recognizing the courage they’ve shown as they struggle for social justice and human rights. In over a decade as a women’s rights activist, I’ve never met anyone who deserves this award more than Ann Njogu.

Olympic dream vs. Vancouver reality
With the close of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, much of the media was quick to declare them a total success. This goes against the mounds of journalism produced before and during the games by the Vancouver Media Co-op, the city’s newly launched independent media center. Believing that there might be more than one answer regarding the success of the games, and one of those should come from the host communities, The Real News spoke to Franklin López, Video Producer with the Co-op, to find out more about the legacy of the 2010 Olympics for the people of Vancouver.

LONDON – While big newspapers and broadcasters have made substantial investments in online video creation and distribution, most have limited their reach and opportunity to the wider Web.

Sandra Bullock Fan Freaks Out While Watching Oscars (VIDEO)
Sandra Bullock’s an Academy Award winner, and nobody’s happier than this guy. Watch him go nuts after her name is announced; he acts like he just got a Nintendo 64 or something. Once regaining his composure, he acknowledges that it would’ve been quite awkward if she lost. Oh goodness, we wouldn’t want that. (via Tosh.0)
