Safe, Retiring House Democrats Owe More Than $2 Million In DCCC Dues
As the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) battles to keep ahead of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), a handful of Democrats who are either in solidly safe seats or retiring have yet to pay their dues to the House f… Continue reading →

Is the Labor Movement Speaking for Its Female Members?
Karen Nausbamm, the director of the AFL-CIO’s Working America, has a penchant for pointing out that the AFL-CIO is the largest women’s organization in the country. In fact, the AFL-CIO comprises about six million dues-paying women, who represent 45 per… Continue reading →

Obama’s Double-Cross
Last spring, President Obama managed to corral the votes of a half dozen formerly pro-life Democrats in the House of Representatives for his takeover of health care. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) had been a staunch supporter of pro-life initiative… Continue reading →

Justice John Paul Stevens: A Champion for Women’s Health
When it comes to reproductive rights in the United States, it is hard to imagine a more striking juxtaposition of retirements than last week’s concurrent announcements by Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court John Paul Stevens and Congressman Bart Stupak. Both men have left indelible marks upon women’s rights in America. Fortunately, Justice Stevens’ career was the more influential and spanned several decades, while Congressman Stupak will likely go down in history for his 15 minutes of fame, which featured his ultimately unsuccessful attempt to hold up the entire health care reform bill trying to jam his proposed ban on private health insurance coverage for abortion into the final legislation.
Justice Stevens’ understanding of women’s interest in both liberty and equality was broad and deep. Upon examining Justice Stevens’ writings during his 35 years on the U.S. Supreme Court, one has to reach the inescapable conclusion that he was a most wise and unusual man who could see beyond the bounds of his own gender.

Bart Stupak’s First “Profile in Courage” Moment
Democratic Representative Bart Stupak’s April 9 announcement that he would not seek re-election from Michigan’s First Congressional District, coming as it does on the heels of his pivotal role in passage of President Obama’s health care reform package, will forever tie him to that iconic legislative moment. First vilified by abortion rights supporters for insisting on anti-abortion language in the first iteration of the health care bill last fall, he was then excoriated by the Right for tipping the balance in favor of the bill’s passage.
Stupak insists that he is not leaving because of the relentless and vicious attacks he has endured from Tea Partiers, abortion opponents, and Republicans, and that he has been weighing this move for many months, and even years. There’s no reason not to believe him when he said that he is retiring now because of the cumulative stresses of the job. Yet regardless of the truth, the former state trooper will forever be linked with what some will consider his “profile in courage” moment, even if others consider it more like “cut and run.”

Let’s Retire Stupak
Today, we’ve just learned Bart Stupak is thinking about retiring. We need to send him a message loud and clear — people are tired of Washington politicians putting their own personal agendas ahead of the best interests of the people.
Please contribute right now and let’s RETIRE Stupak:

Why I Decided to Challenge Bart Stupak in the Democratic Primary
I believe passionately that Americans deserve the opportunity to have affordable, accessible healthcare, and until recently, I believed that Congressman Bart Stupak represented my beliefs in Washington. But when Mr. Stupak threatened to block reform unless the amendment bearing ‘his name’ was included in the bill, I was furious. He crossed the line. He broke his word to his constituents that he would not block healthcare reform over this issue. He lost his district’s trust, and he lost my trust.
His argument that the Stupak Amendment was necessary to prohibit federal funding for abortion is misleading. The Senate bill already included that provision. Mr. Stupak risked derailing the core vision of the Democratic Party, he let down his constituents in the 1st Congressional District, and he no longer deserves to be our Representative. Like so many others, I waited for someone to challenge him. But when no one did, I decided it was time to stand up, and I announced my candidacy.

Trash Talking Mounts In Tea Party Debate (VIDEO)
During a Tea Party protest in DC last weekend during the health care reform vote on Capitol Hill, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo) was reportedly spat on by a protester and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga) was called a ‘ni–er.’
Since voting yes on the health care bill, Congressman Bart Stupak has received threatening phone calls, which he released to news outlets. After a Tea Party activist mistakenly posted the address of Rep. Tom Periello’s brother on the Internet, believing it to be the congressman’s address, someone cut the gas line to that house. Rep. James Clyburn (D-Mo) has been receiving faxes with what he calls “racial slurs, nooses on gallows, and I’m telling you, some very vicious language.”

Christians and Health Care Reform: No Baby Killers Here
When Congressman Randy Neugebauer (R-TX) shouted “baby-killer” during Rep. Bart Stupak’s (D-MI) speech during the health insurance reform vote last Sunday, American political debate reached a new low. Neugebauer has apologized to Stupak, insisting that the remark wasn’t personal — that he was not calling Rep. Stupak a “baby-killer” but was referring to the bill.
Respectfully, Mr. Neugebauer, it doesn’t matter who or what you were slandering with the “baby-killer” epithet. And it really doesn’t matter that you apologized (especially since you turned the whole thing into a fund-raising commercial immediately after said apology). It is unacceptable to use such a term in public discourse ever. Period.

Neugebauer, ‘Baby Killer’ Yeller, Apologizes For Appearing To Yell At Stupak (VIDEO)
Rep. Randy Neugebauer smiled broadly as he was introduced on Fox News’ “Hannity” Tuesday.
The Texas Republican was there for an “exclusive interview” after interrupting the speech of Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) Sunday by yelling “Baby killer” at the pro-life Democrat. Despite the fact that the bill will not allow federal money to be used for abortions, Neugebauer continues to claim that it will.
