PHOTOS: Rodney Alcala’s Photos Might Provide Clues To Other Victims

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — California police say they are receiving calls from the public after releasing more than 100 photos apparently taken by convicted serial killer Rodney Alcala in the 1970s, but tip gathering has been hampered by phone problems at police headquarters.

Huntington Beach police Detective Sgt. Aaron Smith said Thursday a few people called to identify themselves in the photos, but so far no one has said that someone in the photos went missing.

Rodney Alcala Sentenced To Death

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Relatives of four women and a 12-year-old girl who were brutally slain in the late 1970s exploded in applause Tuesday as the jury recommended death for Rodney Alcala, a convicted serial killer whose bizarre defense strategy included lyrics from an Arlo Guthrie song and showing an episode of "The Dating Game."

Jurors took just an hour to return the death recommendation after a six-week trial in which the 66-year-old Alcala – who was representing himself – grilled the mother of one of his victims, cross-examined police investigators and answered his own questions while taking the stand in his own defense.

"As they try to reclaim the ethical high ground during a difficult stretch, House Democratic leaders are considering a dramatic move: declaring a party-wide ban on earmarks this year," the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call reported on Monday.

The idea, floated by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in a leadership huddle Tuesday, is for House Democrats to outflank their Republican counterparts, who have mulled and rejected such a moratorium in recent years.

Pelosi On Job Creation: House Will Get Behind Incremental Approach

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said on Sunday that House Democrats would come around and embrace the incremental approach to job creation that the Senate is pursuing. Last week, an uprising from liberal members of the House stopped a Senate package of tax cuts and infrastructure spending -- which Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and a leading progressive voice, said was not fit to be referred to as a jobs bill.

The rebellious Democrats want to pass a stronger jobs package and go to conference committee, Lee said on Friday, where they would negotiate with the Senate. Senate leaders, however, insist that they will lose Republican votes if they pursue anything other than a step-by-step approach.
