A Real Truth Commission for Honduras
My beloved and troubled country, Honduras, desperately needs a truth commission. On June 28th of last year, a military coup d’etat shattered our fragile democracy and ushered in a period of arbitrary and repressive rule in which those who opposed the coup were subject to violent attacks, illegal detentions and state-imposed media censorship. Though a new government headed by Porfirio Lobo took power on Feb. 27 following highly controversial elections, there has been no real investigation or prosecution of those responsible for the coup and for the many killings, rapes, beatings and illegal detentions that occurred after June 28. In fact, targeted extrajudicial killings and attacks against coup opponents continue to regularly occur with complete impunity.
The Committee for the Families of the Detained and Disappeared of Honduras (COFADEH), which has been documenting forced disappearances and political violence in Honduras since the late ’80s, has registered 47 assassinations of anti-coup activists, 14 of which have occurred since the inauguration of Mr. Lobo. Respected international human rights organizations like the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Center for Justice and International Law have also voiced their alarm regarding the ongoing attacks, but Honduras’ state and judicial authorities have failed to address or even recognize the problem.

No Repeat of Kyrgyzstan in Arab states
The events that unfolded in Kyrgyzstan in the past few days have demonstrated how seemingly entrenched regimes can, in fact, be on the cusp of a coup d’état. Arabs have followed the events in Kyrgyzstan with wonder. But why isn’t the same happening in their own countries?
The former Kyrgyz President, Kurmanbek Bakiev, shares much with leaders from the Arab world. He had “won” an election held in 2005 with a 90% margin after the ousting of the former dictator merely replaced one totalitarian leader with another. More than a dozen Arab countries share similar stories of those who launched coups against a former monarch or president, only to install themselves as rulers until they die.

Blogger Tim Russo Is Running For Office In Cleveland– And He Has Nothing To Hide
A morality tale is playing out in Cuyahoga County, where voters will soon construct a new form of government for Ohio’s most Democratic region.
Last fall, a silent coup d’état was orchestrated by the architects of Cuyahoga County’s Issue 6, a new county charter that replaces the three county commissioners (one of whom is currently the target of an FBI corruption investigation) with 11 county council members and a county executive. The new charter also makes many elected positions (auditor, treasurer, recorder) appointed positions.

Did a White Sheriff and District Attorney Orchestrate a Race-Based Coup in a Northern Louisiana Town?
In Waterproof, a small northern Louisiana town near Natchez, Mississippi, the African American mayor and police chief assert that they have been forced from office and arrested as part of an illegal coup carried out by an alliance of white politicians and their followers. In a lawsuit filed last week, Police Chief Miles Jenkins asserts a wide-ranging conspiracy involving the area’s district attorney and parish sheriff, along with several other members of the region’s entrenched political power structure. These events come at a time of widespread and high-profile racist attacks against the US President and Black members of Congress nationwide, and in a state where white political corruption and violence have been and continue to be used as tools to suppress Black political representation.
