Citizen Media: Drown Out the Noise

This story was originally published on Ceasefire Liberia.

We all know the routine: the journalist, who is viewed as the authority (traditionally white and male), goes into a community and comes back with a story to share with the world. His version of events, experienced through his eyes only, is considered objective reporting for all to read and believe.

JD Salinger

There are books we enjoy and there are books that remove the tops of our skulls and change how we think forever. The Catcher In The Rye falls into the latter category for generations of readers. It damn sure did for me. I was in my late 20s when I first read the book. It had been assigned in my high school, though not in a class I took. But seeing that it was assigned, I figured it couldn't be that good. But I kept hearing about it, so what the hell, I thought. And he starts in right away. It didn't read like any novel I had ever read. It was the rantings of a pissed off, bright, alienated teenager from a rich unhappy family. Holden Caulfield's stream of conscience bitch-a-thon about his life was so natural that I forgot I was reading a novel and just felt I was reading a sweet, smart, often hilarious, memoir of a disillusioned youth.

As Holden, Salinger accomplished the nearly impossible task of speaking in the voice of a teenager and making it ring true. Much like Mark Twain's portrayal of Huckleberry Finn captured the voice of a child.

Our Addiction to Disaster Porn

The black t-shirt and the safari-style button-down - what do these media symbols really mean? I take a look at that question in my new newspaper column out - a newspaper column about disaster porn. Read it here.

I don't know about you, but I simply cannot watch the coverage of the Haiti earthquake anymore, not because the disaster isn't important - but because the news about Haiti is so divorced from the larger issues of poverty and destitution that have plagued Haiti for decades. That's why I call it disaster porn - it's completely exploitative and voyeuristic, rather than contextualized to tell the larger story of the tragedy of Haiti. It's disaster porn stars running around in their disaster chic clothing - t-shirts and safari garb - refusing to tell the real and troubling story of Haiti.

Save the Whales! Abolish Patents! The Case of Green Technology

Want to make green technology work? To revolutionize entertainment? Concerned about free speech? Want to reduce income inequality? To break the stranglehold of the multinationals over political power? To unleash a wave of innovation that will make the establishment of the Internet look like a calm summer day? A Utopian pipe dream. Yet all it takes is a majority vote in both houses of Congress and the signature of the President to abolish impediments to creativity left over from the medieval era: patents and copyrights. Sound absurd? Read on.

Abolishing so-called intellectual "property" (IP) won't solve all social ills -- yet perhaps it will save the whales. In a series of posts based on research with my co-author Michele Boldrin, we are tackling one issue at a time. Our first post looked at health care. Here we examine green technology, specifically technologies designed to mitigate global warming.
