Maintaining a Culture: Haitians After the Quake

While the rest of the world has been pondering the economic and social fate of the recently earthquake devastated island-nation of Haiti, Haitian-Americans alone have asked, “What will happen to our culture?”

As a first generation Haitian-American, I, like many others, have strove to find the balance between the traditions of my Haitian forefathers and the modern value system of America. How do we relocate culture, without it simultaneously losing its authenticity? As young Americans, we balance the old country with the new; today we question what is to become of us and those who have yet to be born if there is no old country left. The precipitous nature of our hyphenated state becomes even more precarious in light of the devastating quake and its continuing aftershocks.
